Virgin Galactic Wins the Billionaire Space Race – What’s Next?

Just this past week, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos rode into space on his rocket. But he wasn’t the first billionaire to go suborbital: on July 12th, Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic successfully launched its spacecraft, Unity, into space. On board were six passengers that not only included two pilots and three mission specialists but Branson himself. And he beat fellow-billionaire Bezos by a few days in their commercial space race. By all accounts, it appears that the Virgin Galactic space flight was a tremendous success. But now is where the more difficult work begins. And for the Virgin Galactic team, that means 2022 will be quite a busy year.

As with any technological advance, a series of tests and modifications must take place over time. Learning and insights come from trial and error and through repeated iteration. We understand this is true for any new software release or hardware development process. But when it comes to the commercial space race, these steps are even more vital. In this regard, we can expect that July’s Virgin Galactic space flight was just one of many more to come. These future developments will play a large part in just how quickly the Space Economy evolves. (Read more about the Space Economy in this Bold story.)

“I have always been a dreamer. My mum told me to never give up and to reach for the stars. This July, our dream will become a reality.” – Sir Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Galactic

The Virgin Galactic Space Flight Model

The Virgin Galactic space flight model is one based on traditional airflight development. The recent successful flight into space reflects the 22nd mission for the spacecraft Unity. This vessel was launched into the edge of space via an airplane mothership that helped it climb to 44,000 feet. From these, the Unity’s rockets catapulted just into the edge of space where passengers experienced weightlessness. The spacecraft then returned safely to ground without apparent mishaps, showing the commercial space race is alive and well.

These aspects of the Virgin Galactic space craft model seem rather straightforward. But there’s a few things that need to be highlighted along the way. For one, the space craft’s engine must be replaced after every flight at a cost of $275,000. That’s roughly the same as the price tag of ticket aboard Branson’s commercial space race vessel. With only six passengers possible aboard the craft, this leaves a fairly tight margin for future profits. However, Branson hopes to make this up in volume over time. In total, he anticipates having multiple international space ports, with each having eight space crafts. And he expects each vessel will fly at least 50 times each year.

“The main focus [with these test series] is to look at things that allow us to increase the flight-rate frequency…we already know, there’s some modifications we want to make to enable that to start to happen.” – Mike Moses, President, Virgin Galactic

Current Status of Branson’s Commercial Space Race

The most recent Virgin Galactic space flight was the first in a series of tests designed to examine operations and flight experiences. Prior assessments have already evaluated aerodynamics and performance quality measures. The current tests are expected to involve a minimum of 3 flights total before moving onto a modification phase for Virgin Galactic. In this subsequent stage, the company will determine specific upgrades to the crafts that can boost flight frequencies. While the remainder of the operational test series will take place this summer, modification phases are scheduled tentatively for 2022. This naturally assumes no major setbacks occur along the way.

Sir Richard Branson won the Billionaire’s Space Race, so what’s next for the world of commercial space flight?

Throughout these stages of development in the commercial space race, Virgin Galactic will continue to service passengers. The company has roughly 600 pre-sold passenger tickets that will need to be honored, and now feels the current Virgin Galactic space flight program can safely begin to do so. They are also now able to do so since the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration granted it a full commercial carrier license in late June. This achievement might even be considered as substantial as the latest Virgin Galactic space flight given its importance. Without it, the company’s participation in space tourism would be on hold.

“Tapping into Sir Richard’s expertise and long history of creating amazing customer experiences will be invaluable as we work to open the wonder of space travel and create awe-inspiring journeys for our customers.” – Michael Colglazier, CEO, Virgin Galactic

Branson’s Role Moving Forward

Branson accompanied the flight crew on this latest mission for important purposes. Because this Virgin Galactic space flight was to evaluate the flight experience, Branson’s insights and knowledge was certainly valuable. But it also reflected his commitment to the commercial space race, which will be crucial in alluring passengers and investors alike. Roughly nine days later, Bezos successfully launched his Blue Horizon into space as well. This resulted in a subsequent drop in Virgin Galactic stock values. While most believe this was transient and reactive, it will remain essential that Branson remain the face of the company.

Part of Branson’s influence on the commercial space race will involve his experience in air travel manufacturing and production. Once modifications and design changes are made, the next step for Virgin Galactic will be to streamline production. While the Virgin Galactic space crafts are built to last at least 10 years, several hundred will be needed. Likewise, efficiencies in production will be needed in order for the company to ensure profitability long-term. This is an area where Branson will also provide valuable input.

Building a Consumer Base for the Future

Without question, safety and a positive customer experience will be important in attracting passengers in the commercial space race. But at the same time, so will affordability. In total, there are 1.5 million decamillionaires in the world (worth tens of millions). For these individuals, the $250,000 ticket price isn’t too far-fetched. But as competition heats up in the commercial space race, a lower price may entice this market target to go elsewhere. Virgin Galactic certainly has great potential to succeed in this area. Only time will tell, however, if they can meet the challenge and come out on top.

BOLD OPINION: To Revitalize Cities, We Need Party Zones

After having spent a year in lockdown, many urban dwellers are welcoming a return of a vibrant city nightlife. As vaccination rates climb, and herd immunity increases, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues are reopening. But simply reopening may not be enough to achieve the urban revitalization needed in many areas. It will take time for many cities to recover from the economic oppression imposed by the pandemic. One possible solution, however, is one that many cities may not have considered. That involves creating designated party zones where patrons and businesses can both meet their needs.

In many cities around the world, nighttime curfews are in place. Many restaurants, bars and other entertainment concert areas must close at specified times. (Want another Bold opinion? The world needs concerts!) This has been thought to be beneficial in reducing crime and illegal activities. However, there is some evidence that these restrictions may have the opposite effect. Therefore, creating party zones to accommodate and extended city nightlife could have many advantages. In addition to contributing to much-needed urban revitalization, it could also improve a city’s overall safety and quality. It’s for these reasons that major cities should seriously consider developing party zones within their boundaries.

“Cities around the world are expanding the way institutions and businesses can operate at night, as limitations on closing hours have pushed late night activity to unlicensed venues, sometimes coming into conflict with residential uses.” – New York City’s Office of Nightlife Report

New York’s Recent Proposal for City Nightlife

One of the cities that was hardest hit by the pandemic was undoubtedly New York City. Many bars and restaurants were forced to close as lockdowns and quarantine restrictions were imposed. As these restrictions have been lifted, city nightlife has returned and is more vibrant than ever. However, continued curfews at nighttime have prevented the degree of urban revitalization that the city needs. As a result, the New York city Office of Nightlife has proposed testing 24-hour party hubs in the city. In doing so, it hopes to not only revitalize key areas but also support the city’ longstanding environment for creativity.

The report provided by the Office of Nightlife in New York City notes that there are many benefits to 24-hour party zones. In addition to allowing businesses to extend services, party zones would also provide destinations for patrons after hours. Rather than congregating in the street, or hanging out in residential areas, New Yorkers would have a place to go. If these designated areas were outside of residential neighborhoods, conflicts between partygoers and residents would be less. At the same time, party zones would provide a setting for artists, musicians, and others to explore their creative side. Based on the analysis, party zones could preserve New York City’s culture while contributing substantially to urban revitalization.

“In residential areas, nightlife and music venues can create noise and attract traffic that draws complaints from neighboring residents. Allowing 24-hour use in specified districts, if implemented properly, can help people to move at their own pace and reduce conflicts.” – New York City’s Office of Nightlife Report

Modeling Other City’s Urban Revitalization Efforts

New York City is not the only major urban area to adopt such a perspective. In fact, several metropolitan areas around the world have done so with success. In 2012, the city of Amsterdam expanded its city nightlife by offering 24-hour operation licenses to select businesses. This included restaurants, bars, in a variety of cultural event venues. In order to receive a license, the city of Amsterdam required applicants to provide significant cultural value in their offerings. They also encouraged activities that appealed to the entire community during the day. This move has contributed greatly to Amsterdam’s urban revitalization efforts.

A cartoon of a bunch of people partying
Want to spark urban revitalization? The answer is simple: create party zones.

Amsterdam is not alone in this regard. In Tokyo, Japan, efforts to expand the city nightlife in specific areas began in 2016. Specifically, the Shibuya Ward Area extended its hours of operation well into the evening to accommodate greater tourism. Under Tokyo’s Nightlife Tourism Promotion Grant, additional funding was used to keep public areas open much longer. This has resulted insignificant tourism growth since that time. Likewise, Santiago de Cali in Columbia has created extended-hour party areas in its city as well. After 1:00 AM curfews resulted in higher crime rates, a change in its city nightlife policy took place. Once these curfews were extended in specified areas, crime rates declined and urban revitalization took place.

“Amsterdam began allowing nightlife venues to apply for 24-hour licenses in 2012, developing strict criteria for potential applicants that included cultural significance, accessibility to public transportation, and locations without ‘inconvenience to local residents.’…Approximately a dozen venues hold this extended hours permit, which allows for safer, more coordinated late-night activity throughout the city.” – New York City’s Office of Nightlife Report

Party Zones Are Essential for Urban Revitalization

When it comes to urban revitalization, New York City is not the only area struggling. The migration of workers to home settings resulted in many office centers being underutilized. While cities can serve as hubs for these businesses, a vibrant city nightlife is essential as well. Not only can this extend opportunities for urban businesses to thrive. It can also promote social interaction, creative exploration, and exposure to diversity. Each of these are critical for the innovation needed to advance society.

Party zones offer a win-win scenario that creates great potential toward urban revitalization. Such party zones can provide targeted destinations that promote creativity and social connection. And if structured well, these hubs can contribute further to a city’s culture and city nightlife without impacting residential areas. As with New York, testing specific areas within the urban environment can be informative. Through such experiments, best practices can be better defined. But as evidenced by other major cities around the globe, party zones are effective in driving growth and innovation. For these reasons, we should appreciate these concepts as a means by which modern urban environments can thrive.

Handyman Services Go Mainstream with Top Home Improvement Apps

When it comes to handyman services, many are independent contractors. In fact, most started out as simply doing a few odd jobs for neighbors and friends during their weekends or time off. But as requests, and revenues, began pouring in, those adept in a variety of tasks chose to start their own business. In the process, they found a number of home improvement apps that could help them find clients and manage their business. All of this paved the way for the handyman services sector to enter into the gig economy.

Today, dozens of home improvement apps exist that help customers find all kinds of handyman services. Whether they need help with plumbing, yardwork, minor home repairs or major remodeling, platforms are readily available. Likewise, those in the handyman business are better able to grow their clientele and reputation through these apps and platforms also. Business tasks that used to be extremely time-consuming is now efficient and productive. And with the flexibility that these home improvement apps offer, it’s not surprising the overall industry is flourishing.

“There is no doubt the home services sector has always been and will always be necessary, but with people spending more time at home due to the pandemic, it is ripe to explode in growth.” – Blake Taylor, Independent Handyman Business Owner

Moving Toward an Uber-Like Model

Home improvement apps are not necessarily new in terms of consumer services. Angie’s List was among one of the first platforms that connected homeowners with handyman services and other professionals. Today, Angie’s List has over 3 million members and offers a wide variety of home services. It also provides an excellent pricing guide for specific needs and offers reviews of various professionals. But this was just the beginning as the number of home improvement apps have grown significantly since. And in some cases, mergers and acquisitions have occurred, helping consolidate the industry. (Read more about the growth potential found in mergers and acquisitions in this Bold story.)

Today, the parent company for Angie’s List is simply called Angi HomeServices. In 2017, Angie’s List merged with HomeAdvisor to form Angi after being acquired by IAC. Angi then acquired Handy in 2018, which was one of the more popular home improvement apps. In essence, Handy provided a platform where customers and professionals could connect for specific jobs. Like other gig platforms, Handy takes a fee when jobs are completed as part of its services. Thus, in many ways, it acts just like other gig platforms like Uber, Lyft and others. Given the range of services that Angi offers, it is very possible more mergers and acquisitions will follow.

“Pros use the Handy platform as a way to supplement their income and find jobs that fit their schedules, including other jobs and personal obligations.” – Oisin Hanrahan, Cofounder of Handy and CEO of Angi

Other Home Improvement Apps On the Rise

Surveys that have asked professionals about various platforms for handyman services, Handy ranks near the top. But it’s just one of many home improvement apps they routinely use to enhance their ability to provide business services. Handy and Angie’s List are great for matching customers with needed handyman services. But others help professionals manage marketing, finances, invoicing, estimates and other essential business needs. With this in mind, the following are among some of the most popular home improvement apps today.

  • Joist – This is one of the most commonly used home improvement apps by handyman professionals. In fact, Joist has recorded over $29 billion in contractor invoices involving over 900,000 handyman professionals. The platform streamlines the ability to provide customers with estimates. It also efficiently manages invoices and payments. And reports and documents created are highly professional and can be accessed on mobile devices.
  • Thumbtack – Not only can marketing handyman services be time-consuming, but they can also be costly. With this platform, however, professionals can create their own marketing profile that will then be promoted on the app. Job type preferences, location, scheduling options, and more can be included. Thumbtack then connects handyman professionals with clients whose needs and profiles match. This saves both time and money in the process for everyone.
  • Thimble – Another inconvenience in running one’s own handyman services business involves liability insurance. Annual premiums through a traditional insurance company can be expensive and unnecessary. Fortunately, Thimble is one of the home improvement apps that tailors general liability coverage to professionals’ needs. Policies are tailored to the job, and can be purchased for a duration lasting hours, days, or weeks. Likewise, an application can be completed within minutes with a Certificate of Insurance immediately available.
  • TaskRabbit – Though not only for handyman services, TaskRabbit does pay handyman professionals the most. This platform allows customers to list various home tasks for others to complete. At the same time, professionals can list their specialty, rates, and availability. Plus, unlike other home improvement apps, TaskRabbit allows tips to be earned in addition to wages. Many handyman professionals thus include this platform among their list of job searchers on a regular basis.
  • Chore Relief – Some home improvement apps tend to be more locally focused than others. Chore Relief is such an app as it strives to connect local community providers with customers. In addition, it also provides customers with advice and recommendations based on other customers’ feedback. In this way, Chore Relief utilizes trust economy strategies to provide higher quality services to its users. Future Home Improvement Industry Changes

As with other platforms involved in the gig economy, home improvement apps face some challenges over labor policies. But it’s clear that the home improvement industry is evolving as new technologies emerge. Some major players in this sector are beginning to consolidate offerings through various acquisition strategies. Others are considering a franchising approach. But in either case, it reflects an industry undergoing notable change, and many additional changes are likely to occur before the dust settles for good.
