During the counterculture movement of the 1960s, the use of psychedelics was rampant. But not long after, the War on Drugs targeted these substances, as well as many others, causing them to quickly fall out of favor. However, hallucinogenics now look to be following in the same footsteps as cannabis and CBD. Psychedelic treatment is gaining increasing support for a variety of mental health diseases in many states. More specifically, the use of a specific ingredient of these substances, known as psilocybin therapy, has notable promise. As a result, many health experts are beginning to take a second look at these previously prohibited medications.

(Read more about how cannabis and CBD are the new frontier of medical treatment in this Bold deep-dive.)

Psychedelic treatment is a relative new area of study, beginning a little more than a decade ago. While drugs like LSD were initially developed in the 1940s and 1950s for medicinal use, they never reached mainstream medicine. But this looks to be rapidly changing based on evidence-based research showing support. Psilocybin therapy is actively being investigated for conditions like depression, anxiety, addiction, and PTSD. And thus far, the results appear to be pretty impressive. In fact, these substances may actually have much greater potential for human health and advancement than previously realized.

“Psychedelics or hallucinogens cause visual hallucinations which change the way you see the world. But the most important part of their effects for those of us who are looking at their therapeutic uses is that they also heighten people’s emotions.” – Bruna Giribaldi, Clinical Trial Manager, Psychedelic Research and Neuropsychopharmacology, Imperial College London

How Psilocybin Therapy Works

Naturally, there are a number of substances that are considered hallucinogens. The main one in LSD is lysergic acid while peyote contains mescaline. But the main one being investigated the most for psychedelic treatment is psilocybin, which is found naturally in some mushrooms. Often referred to as magic mushrooms, these are native to parts of the U.S. as well as Central and South America. Likewise, they have been consumed for millennia as part of healing and religious practices. Thus, current considerations of psilocybin therapy for health problems is not that far-fetched.

In essence, psilocybin is metabolized quickly to psilocin after it is consumed. Psilocin is known to bind to a specific type of serotonin receptor in the brain called 5-HT2A. Interestingly, a variety of pharmaceutical drugs on the market target serotonin and these receptors to treat mental health conditions. This includes drugs like Prozac and Zoloft. But psilocybin therapy is different in that it binds much more strongly and diffusely. As a result, its effects are more profound as well as more lasting, based on current research. Experts believe this is because this psychedelic treatment promotes a rewiring of the brain that can have long-lasting positive effects.

“The magnitude of the effect [of psilocybin therapy] we saw was about four times larger than what clinical trials have shown for traditional antidepressants on the market.” – Alan Davis, Ph.D., Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research

Theory and Evidence Supporting Psychedelic Treatment

From a theoretical perspective, psilocybin therapy is able to achieve what other serotonin drugs has not. Experts suggest that this substance binds serotonin receptors so broadly that it connects brain areas not normally connected. For example, connections between visual and auditory areas of the brains account for bizarre hallucinations involve sight and sound. This ability is how psychedelic treatment is believed to work. By creating these new brain pathways, rigid beliefs and perceptions are weakened. This allows greater flexibility and openness to consider new alternatives. Thus, when combined with positive support psychotherapy, psychedelic treatment can help a number of mental health issues.

Some mushrooms growing against a tree in the forest
Who knew that magic mushrooms would one day lead to psilocybin therapy?

There is now evidence to support these theories as well. In a study involving 24 adults with known depression, researchers at Johns Hopkins demonstrated a positive effect with psilocybin therapy. Each person received two 5-hour sessions over four weeks’ time. At the end of the study, over 70% had greater than 50% reduction in their depression symptoms. Even more, over half were considered to be in complete remission. Though larger and longer duration studies are needed, these results were impressive. If continued psychedelic treatment would allow a more permanent and lasting effect, this could revolutionize mental health management.

“How do we explain the incredible magnitude and durability of effects [of psilocybin therapy]? Treatment research with moderate to high doses of psychedelics may uncover entirely new paradigms for understanding and improving mood and mind. This is a taste of things to come…” –  Tim Ferriss, Serial Entrepreneur and Investor in Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research

The Potential Scope of Psychedelic Treatment

In terms of mental health, psychedelic treatment is being tried in a variety of conditions with some success. In addition to depression, psilocybin therapy has shown promise in managing anxiety and PTSD. Specifically in PTSD, these substances enable re-experiencing previous trauma that might be otherwise suppressed. When this occurs in a safe setting with trained therapists, the outcomes have been beneficial. In addition, psilocybin has also been beneficial in treating both nicotine and alcohol addiction. In all cases, the substance appears to alter perceptions and emotions to create healthier behaviors and perspectives.

There’s no question that significant advances appear to be occurring in mental healthcare. Over the last few years, a vast number of mental health apps have been introduced to the market. (Read more about the steady rise of mental health apps in this Bold story.) Likewise, artificial intelligence is also being used to guide care as well. But psychedelic treatment has a potential that goes beyond the management of mental health conditions. Some believe these types of substances could unlock even greater human potential and lead to advanced capacities and wellness. Certainly, this type of research has yet to be pursued to any significant degree. But if psilocybin therapy proves beneficial for mental health disorders in general, this may very be the next step.

Climate Change and Water Resilience – Seeking Water Crisis Solutions for Our Future

The recent UN report on climate change should trigger a tremendous call to action based on its findings. Past evidence shows that man-made factors have resulted in significant increases in global warming over the last fifty years. This means that the future will undoubtedly result in an increasing number of fires, droughts, and flooding. The question is no longer whether changes in human behavior can stop climate change. Its now more about mitigating its impact and building a stronger capacity for resilience. This is especially important when it comes to climate change and water supply threats. We need water crisis solutions today if we’re going to effectively navigate future ecological disasters. (Ecological disasters require Bold solutions–read more in this Bold story.)

Climate change and water supply issues go hand in hand for obvious reasons. As global warming occurs, geographic terrains will become altered. This will affect fresh water supplies throughout the world. But at the same time, climate change will bring about catastrophic weather events that will disrupt existing water systems. Therefore, water crisis solutions will need to consider broad areas of impacts. Fortunately, there are a number of bold organizations today striving to address these issues. Through their efforts, an enhanced capacity for improved water resilience can become a true reality. But it will take more than their efforts alone. It will require communities throughout the world to make a real difference.

“When we look back at this period, it will be the time when we made the big decisions that mattered and so there are opportunities for real leadership and if we don’t get it we will have [global climate-related] catastrophe.” – Spencer Glendon, Founder of Probable Futures and Doctorate of Economic History

A Climate Change and Water Supply Reality

If there was ever a time for water crisis solutions and investments into the Blue Economy, it would certainly be now. (Read up on the facets of the Blue Economy in this Bold story–one of many on the topic!) At the current time, roughly a third of all people in the world lack access to clean water. At the same time, about half the world’s population do not have a safe toilet system. This has significant impacts as a result on human health and well-being. Poor water supplies markedly increase the number of diarrheal illnesses, which accounts for major increases in infant mortality. It also prohibits hand-washing, which further spreads communicable diseases. And it also affect opportunities for education. Over 100 million children, mostly girls, are unable to attend school because they must collect water from remote sites. Even before considering climate change and water supply effects, this is our present baseline.

Water resilience is a growing concern with the rise of climate change issues.

By the year 2050, the U.N. reports that 3.2 billion people will live in water scarce areas. These predictions may actually be brighter than reality, however. With global warming, geographic shifts are likely to occur and disrupt existing water systems. In some cases, this could suddenly affect millions of people. Even in the U.S., water crisis solutions are already needed. Reports show that 7 out of 10 Americans drink contaminated water supplies that could impact their health. Specifically, 233 million Americans are exposed to toxins in their water supply, like lead and arsenic. Superimpose climate change and water supply issues on this, and the problem rapidly becomes catastrophic. Human health hangs in the balance as a result.

“People living in extreme poverty deserve a complete and sustainable solution, not a band-aid or an intermediary step, or the promise that one day someone will return to finally solve their water and sanitation problem.” – Marla Smith-Nilson, Founder and Executive Director of Water1st International

Organizations Striving to Find Water Crisis Solutions

Fortunately, there are a number of international organizations trying to make a difference. Appreciating climate change problems, they are making bold moves to develop sustainable water crisis solutions. Leveraging technological, financial, and community resources, these organizations believe they can create better water resilience. It’s no longer a matter of reversing climate change but instead mitigating the effects it will inevitably bring.

  • Probable Futures – Founder Spencer Glendon of Probable Futures sees one of the issues of climate change and water supply as being informational. He believes providing the world with better knowledge and tools to make better decisions offers one approach to water resilience. As a result, he hopes to provide the public with free maps, tools, and resources to contribute to water crisis solutions. Through a group effort, equipped with facts and knowledge, he sees a brighter future in dealing with water scarcity.
  • Water1st International – Founded by Marla Smith-Nilson in 2005, Water1st International provides a different type of water crisis solutions. Since its founding, the organization has completed over 3,500 projects and served nearly 250,000 people. Through sustainable projects backed by water and sanitation experts, Water1st provides piped water and toilets to households. The organization anticipates this will be an increasing need as climate change and water supply issues worsen. This is why they too see water resilience as an important subject today.
  • Aquagenuity – As noted, water crisis solutions are needed in the U.S. as well. Doll Avant founded Aquagenuity with this in mind. As a data scientists, she is using machine learning and other cutting-edge technologies to provide real-time water data. This data then allows communities and individuals the ability to monitor the quality of their own water supply. Self-labeled Guardians of H2O, over 1 million supporters have joined Avant in her efforts. Thus, as climate change and water supply problems grow, she hopes technology can help provide some water resilience solutions.

“We have gone far beyond providing a list of toxins and parts per billion found in local water supplies (gibberish that means almost nothing to the average consumer); instead, we make water quality data visual, color-coded, and relevant.” – Doll Avant, Founder of Aquagenuity

It Takes a Community Effort to Make an IMPACT

The achievements of these types of organizations in addressing climate change and water supply shortages are noteworthy. But it will take more than isolated efforts to develop widespread water crisis solutions and enhance water resilience. It will take a global effort involving all communities through active participation.

Understanding this, IMPACT Public Service Fund, a group committed to improving civic life, is holding its “Future of Water” seminar. The virtual conference will take place on September 23rd at 6PM and feature key leaders in the water crisis solutions’ movement. Participants will gain a deeper understanding about climate change and water supply problems we all face. These are the types of activities needed to move toward greater water resilience in the future.

PayPal and Bitcoin: A Match Made in Digital Heaven?

Cryptocurrency has had quite an interesting year. After a tremendous boom in the first few months of 2021, a notable crash in cryptocurrency prices occurred. Amidst concerns about regulatory changes involving digital coin and heavy energy use for cryptocurrency mining, investors became spooked. But after reaching its nadir in  mid-May, it has since begun to rebound. In fact, Bitcoin’s value recently exceeded $50,000, reflecting a 4 percent increase since May. But the change of investors’ heart didn’t result from changes in energy consumption of digital coin regulation. Instead, it resulted from a major announcement regarding PayPal and cryptocurrency overall.

(Go deeper on why cryptocurrency mining is bad for the climate in this Bold story.)

PayPal recently announced its expansion into the UK financial markets. In the U.S., PayPal and cryptocurrency trades have been available for nearly a year. But PayPal has been hesitant to expand into other foreign markets with its cryptocurrency transactions and offerings. This now appears to have changed, indicating a growing acceptance of digital coin use among foreign financial institutions. The news had a significant impact on cryptocurrency markets, especially among digital coins that PayPal will cover in the UK. And it suggests a tipping point for cryptocurrency transactions may soon be upon us.

“We think that we’re going to be helping the cryptocurrency ecosystem develop further in the U.K. In the U.S., we knew there was high demand for this service. we’ve launched, we’ve seen incredible and sustained engagement from our users. Consumers who buy, hold and sell cryptocurrency on our platform in the U.S. log on at 2x their previous rate.” – Public statement by PayPal

PayPal and Cryptocurrency in the UK

As an overview, PayPal will now allow residents in the UK to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency using their PayPal accounts. Customers can purchase specific cryptocurrencies through a bank or by using their debit cards. These digital coins include only Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash currently. In addition, PayPal has set limits in the UK for cryptocurrency transactions. The maximum transaction amount will be set at £15,000 with an annual limit of £35,000. This is notable different than in the U.S. where no annual limits exist, and weekly limits total $100,000. Regardless, PayPal and cryptocurrency experts expect the UK launch to trigger a significant increase in digital coin transactions.

To compare, PayPal announced the ability to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency in the U.S> last fall. Partnering with Paxos Trust Company, PayPal was able to integrate systems into its fintech platforms to accommodate these activities. Since then, PayPal has seen the number of cryptocurrency transactions  more than double. Given that the company makes money from customers buying and selling cryptocurrency, the move has been quite lucrative. Plus, PayPal added cryptocurrency transactions to its Venmo app last November. The success generated from these moves prompted PayPal to expand to the UK. This seems like a logical move since the UK is PayPal’s second largest market and a major fintech hub globally.

“The pandemic has accelerated digital change and innovation across all aspects of our lives — including the digitization of money and greater consumer adoption of digital financial services.” – Jose Fernandez da Ponte, VP and General Manager of Blockchain, Crypto and Digital Currencies at PayPal

The Vision for PayPal and Cryptocurrency

Beside the limits on cryptocurrency transactions in the UK, there is one other notable difference in comparison to the U.S. PayPal will not be enabling e-commerce checkouts at this time using digital coin. In the U.S., PayPal introduced its “Checkout with Crypto” platform where users can convert cryptocurrency to pay for online purchases. In this instance, PayPal simply converts digital coin to USD for a transaction fee. Businesses then receive compensation in U.S. dollars. Given that PayPal has over 29 million business members, this has the potential for a tremendous impact. But these PayPal and cryptocurrency options are only available in the U.S. at this time.

A bitcoin having fun at a rave
What does the PayPal and cryptocurrency union in the UK mean for transactions elsewhere?

Of course, that doesn’t mean things won’t change in the near future. Both PayPal and cryptocurrency analysts appreciate the value such a platform can offer. By streamlining cryptocurrency transactions via e-commerce, it’s likely more and more consumers will test out digital coin. In addition, because online businesses aren’t penalized for these cryptocurrency transactions, they’ll gladly support them. This is particularly true given the challenges businesses face in managing digital coin transactions themselves. In essence, PayPal and cryptocurrency conversions provide a needed service to these e-commerce sites. By all accounts, PayPal’s expansion into commercial cryptocurrency transactions looks to be a win-win for all.

“Enabling cryptocurrencies to make purchases at businesses around the world is the next chapter in driving the ubiquity and mass acceptance of digital currencies.” – Dan Schulman, President and CEO, PayPal

Laying the Groundwork for the Future

The recent expansion into the UK is just one of many moves that PayPal is making in terms of digital coin. Several recent events have been reported involving PayPal and cryptocurrency businesses. PayPal’s venture capital arm, for example, has invested in a number of companies involved in cryptocurrency transactions. This includes investments in TRM Labs, which handles cryptocurrency safety concerns using risk management software. (Is crypto really safe? Read this Bold story to find out.) It also involves funding for Talos, a digital asset trading infrastructure firm. And it also pertains to investments in TaxBit, a cryptocurrency tax software system. All of these activities show how PayPal in heavily invested in digital coin’s future.

Most experts anticipate that PayPal will introduce commercial cryptocurrency transactions in the UK in a short amount of time. Likewise, they also expect that other countries and markets may soon be the target for PayPal and cryptocurrency decisions. If the UK experiment goes well, not only will this encourage PayPal to move forward with its digital coin expansions. It will also help financial institutions move toward a digital economy. For these reasons, it looks like a tipping point in the acceptance of digital coin may be around the corner. And PayPal is more than happy it seems to be leading the charge.
