When people hear the word ‘drone’, what comes to mind is that it is revolutionary. The impact of a drone in people’s everyday lives has blossomed over the years. Drone technology has exceeded expectations, from taking bizarre selfies to spying on others. Now, the industry of unmanned aerial vehicles is starting to realize practical uses like securing and saving lives.
CyPhy Works Incorporated gave Massachusetts State Police unmanned aerial vehicles for security at the Boston marathon.
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is deemed to be one of the most important people today. The U.S. Secret Service, the federal agency charged with protecting the nation’s President and Vice President, announced plans to station a high-tech drone during the visit of Trump to his club in New Jersey.
Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster is Trump’s favorite weekend spot. The huge 535-acre facility has a 16-acre practice facility, five putting greens, and an indoor golf training center.
The plans of the U.S. Secret Service to deploy a drone at the club is also for a greater purpose. They want to see how it will deliver ways to give protection not just to the President but to surrounding individuals as well. They want to see the possibility of using drones for personal security in the future.
According to Will Knight, a Senior Editor at the MIT Technology Review, “There is a growing interest in using drones for security generally and the technology has improved so much in recent years that you can throw these things up there pretty easily to provide quick and effective surveillance.”
There is no word yet about the small drone that will be deployed. But the agency mentioned that the drone is going to have infrared and electro-optical cameras in order to determine different threats. It will also be placed on a microfilament tether, which will provide power to the drone allowing it to remain aloft for an unlimited period of time.
Better Use of Drones
With the continuous innovation of drones, different ways to use them are now being discovered.
- Drones can be installed with a myriad of sensors
- Drones can be used for monitoring a specific person, place, or situation
- Drones are now a big help to the film industry for filming aerial shots
- Drones have the capacity to explore oil, gas, and mineral location
- Drones can be used for disaster relief situations
- Drones are now being used to survey land and job sites
- Drones can be used for recreational flying
It is not the first time that drones are used for safety and security purposes. The Guardian discussed that CyPhy Works Incorporated gave Massachusetts State Police unmanned aerial vehicles for security at the Boston marathon. The marathon has become controversial because of a terrorist bombing in 2013, and security became a very high priority.
The U.S. Secret Service said that people near the golf club will be notified that they are deploying a drone. This action is part of their initiative to protect people’s privacy.
This is a bold action that will move drones to a front and center position for security in the future.
