Could “smart stop lights” be a Bold Idea? Could they have a Bold Impact? We think saving people time, being earth friendly and making our transportation more efficient meets the test.
Carnegie Mellon has been a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research since Herbert Simon and Allen Newell invented the field in the 1950s. It has been a Bold Idea in the making for some time with many applications. Thankfully the pursuit of the technology’s impact continues.
Now in Pittsburgh, AI is being applied to traffic applications. Early tests at 50 traffic locations are encouraging. Rapid Flow Technologies, the system manufacturer, estimates travel times have been cut 25%, emissions reduced by 21% and idling times reduced a whopping 40%. If the systems are applied worldwide, the impact would be enormous. Bold Impact!
We hope they show up in your neighborhood soon!
